Your doctor may ask you for blood cell counts before or during treatment to check whether the amount of different blood cells in the body is normal. The level of important blood cells can be reduced which your body needs to function properly because of cancer and treatment of cancer such as chemotherapy and radiation therapy.

Typically measurement of blood cell:

  • White blood cells which function like immune system cells that protect your body from foreign substance and invaders. If the level of white blood cells is low then there is a high risk of infections.
  • Red blood cells that transport body-wide oxygen. An iron-rich protein found red blood cells that carries the oxygen to the lungs to the rest of the body called hemoglobin. A test will be done to measure the level of hemoglobin. A low level of hemoglobin can cause anemia. To measure the level of hematocrit another test is done which is the small part of a total volume that consists of red blood cells.
  • Platelets are the cells that help your blood to form clots and stop bleeding.

Blood cell count may be useful before treatment begins to check whether you have any other disease such as anemia that needs to be treated first.

Ultrasound

In this technique, high-frequency sound waves are sent to your breasts and then convert them into the image on the viewscreen. There is no radiation involved in it. Ultrasound is not used om its own as a breast cancer metastasis screening test. It is used to complement other screening tests. If there is any abnormality felt by physical exam or detected on mammography then ultrasound is the best technique to check out if the abnormality is solid or fluid-filled. However, it cannot help in detecting whether the lump is cancerous or not and it cant help also in detecting the classifications.

Ultrasound is also helpful to guide biopsy needle exactly to doubtful areas in the breast.

It is useful to identify changes in bones caused by injury, healing or disease such as cancer. PET scans are not used to screen breast cancer. This technique is used to detect small tumors because of its limited ability however, it can be helpful for judge the disease after breast cancer has already been diagnosed in different ways such as

  1. To check if cancer has spread to lymph nodes.
  2. To check if cancer has spread to other body parts and if so, where.
  3. To evaluate if invasive breast cancer responding to treatment.

PET scans are expensive therefore they are available in a few centers. Generally, they are used to check whether cancer spread beyond the breast when the doctor has reason to believe that.

IHC is a special process performed on breast cancer tissue which is removed during a biopsy. These tissues are in frozen or in fresh form. IHC is used to check whether cancer cells have HER2 receptors of hormone receptors on their surface. It plays a critical role in treatment.
